Shopify Template vs Custom Development — What Indian Businesses Need To Know

You found a Shopify theme for ₹5,000. Why would you pay ₹80,000 for a custom Shopify store? Here's the honest answer — and it's not what most agencies will tell you.

The ₹5,000 Question

We get this question often: "I found a Shopify theme for ₹5,000. It looks great. Why would I pay ₹80,000 for a custom Shopify store?"

It's a fair question. And the honest answer is: for many businesses, the ₹5,000 theme is the right choice. But for others, it's the most expensive decision they'll make in their e-commerce journey.

The difference comes down to your requirements — and most Indian D2C brands have requirements they don't realize they have until they're deep into a project.

What A Template Actually Includes

Shopify themes are pre-built website templates. They come with:

  • • Pre-designed layouts for product pages, collections, and cart
  • • Standard sections: hero banner, featured products, newsletter
  • • Basic customization: colors, fonts, logo placement
  • • Standard Shopify features: variants, tags, collections

This is great for: single-product stores, small catalogues (under 100 products), dropshipping, simple retail without complex logic.

What Templates Can't Do

Here's where it gets specific to the Indian market. When we build Shopify stores for Indian D2C brands, most of them need functionality that no theme can provide without serious custom work:

1. ERP Integration

You use Tally for accounting. Or Zoho Books. Or a custom inventory system. You need your Shopify store to sync inventory, push orders, and pull product data automatically. A standard theme doesn't talk to your ERP — you need custom development to build this bridge.

2. Dynamic Pricing Logic

Commodity pricing that changes daily. Tiered pricing for different customer segments. Bulk discounts that calculate based on quantity AND product category. B2B net payment terms. None of this is in a standard theme.

3. Smart Search and Filtering

Indian customers expect Amazon-style search: instant results, attribute filters, variant comparison. The standard Shopify search is basic at best. Building smart search requires custom development.

4. B2B Wholesale Portals

If you sell to both retail customers AND business partners (B2B), you need separate experiences: different pricing, different payment terms, different catalogues. A theme can't handle this out of the box.

5. High-SKU Catalogues (500+ Products)

When you have 500+ products with multiple variants (size, color, material, style), the standard collection pages become slow and confusing. You need custom filtering, faceted search, and performance optimization that a theme simply can't deliver.

The Real Cost Of The Cheap Theme

We've seen this pattern repeatedly:

  1. 1. Brand buys a ₹5,000 theme, sets up store
  2. 2. Realizes after 3 months they need ERP integration — spends ₹50,000 on custom work
  3. 3. Needs B2B pricing — another ₹40,000 on custom work
  4. 4. Smart search not working — another ₹30,000
  5. 5. Performance issues at scale — refactor needed

Total spent: ₹1,25,000 on multiple patches, inconsistent code, and a store that still doesn't work properly.

A custom build from the start would have cost ₹80,000-1,20,000 and done everything right from day one.

Who Should Use A Template

Templates are the right choice when:

  • • You're testing a product idea (validation phase)
  • • You have under 50 products with simple variants
  • • You don't need ERP, CRM, or third-party integrations
  • • Your pricing is fixed (no dynamic or tiered pricing)
  • • You're selling to one customer type only (retail OR wholesale)
  • • You plan to migrate off Shopify once you scale

Who Needs Custom Development

Custom Shopify development is the right choice when:

  • • You have 200+ products or complex variant logic
  • • You need ERP, inventory management, or accounting integration
  • • You have B2B + B2C customer types
  • • You need dynamic pricing (bulk, tiered, member pricing)
  • • Your business logic doesn't fit standard Shopify features
  • • Performance and speed are critical (Core Web Vitals matter for SEO)
  • • You're migrating from another platform and need SEO preservation

The Framework We Use

Before recommending anything, we ask three questions:

  1. What happens if we hit scale? If you're planning for 5x growth, a template will break. Build right from the start.
  2. What integrations do you need? If you need ERP sync, custom pricing, or third-party tools, a template becomes a liability.
  3. What's the cost of rebuilding vs. building right? Sometimes the template is genuinely the right call — but do the math on what rework will cost.

Our Recommendation

We won't tell you to always choose custom development. That's not honest. What we will tell you is this: understand your requirements before you buy a theme. Talk to someone who has built stores at scale in India. Get a realistic picture of what you'll need 12-18 months from now.

If you're starting out, testing a product, or have simple requirements — a template is fine. Shopify's platform is solid enough that you can get going with a good theme.

If you're past that stage, planning real growth, or have specific business requirements — invest in custom development. It's cheaper in the long run and builds a store that actually works for your business.
